Turmeric vs Omega-3: Which Supplement Fights Inflammation Better?

How Curcumin Works, and Its Famous Weakness

How Omega-3s Work

Omega-3s change the composition of the system rather than blocking one switch. Cell membranes stock both omega-6 arachidonic acid and omega-3 EPA and DHA, and when inflammation kicks off, enzymes convert whichever fats are available into signaling molecules. Arachidonic acid becomes potently inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes; EPA and DHA become far milder versions, plus a family of compounds called resolvins and protectins whose job is to actively resolve inflammation rather than merely not promote it. The cardiovascular story is larger but more nuanced: omega-3s reliably lower triglycerides at gram doses, and a large trial of high-dose purified EPA reported fewer cardiovascular events in high-risk patients, though other trials using mixed EPA and DHA at lower doses found little effect, and high-dose trials have observed a small increase in atrial fibrillation.
